Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and the rest of the Gotham City Police Department hit the ground running at the start of Season 2. They are on a much needed breather, before returning for the second half of the season.

Based on the teasers, Jim will have his hands full with the arrival of Victor Fries a.k.a. Mr. Freeze. The character is a well-known villain in the DC Comic world, and fans of both the series and the comic books will be treated to the show’s version of the popular character. Deadline reports that “House of Cards” actor Nathan Darrow has been cast to play the ice cold villain.

Just like the other villains that have been introduced in the show so far, the beginnings of his transformation into a super villain will be revealed. Victor Fries is an extremely smart and skilled cryogenics engineer. When his wife, Nora, gets struck by a terminal disease, he attempts to use his abilities to find a way to freeze her. His desperation to save her will transition him from a genius scientist into a sinister villain.

“Gotham” Season 2 also promises to dive deeper into the secrets of Indian Hill and Dr. Bruno Strange. Two big villains will be rising, after the fall of Theo Galavan (James Frain) and the Joker (Cameron Monaghan) in the first half of the season. Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) also remains in the picture, after he strengthened his unusual bond with Jim, when they worked together at the mid-season finale.

“Gotham” Season 2 returns on Monday, Feb. 29 at 8:00 p.m. ET on FOX.
