“The Gunman” placed only fourth at the weekend box office having earned $5.02 million failing to beat “Run All Night” with $5.03 million, “Cinderella” with $34.97 million and “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” with $52.26 million.

Before the weekend, “The Gunman” star Sean Penn appeared on Conan O’Brien’s CBS show, in which he talked about his controversial Oscars 2015 green card joke and gave his insights on ISIS.

For O’Brien, Penn’s joke involving the award-winning Mexican director Alejandro Iñárritu was hilarious so he pointed out that “there's this blow-back, people think, how dare he say that.” The host asked Penn, “What was your response to the criticism of your joke?”

“They could be a bit more cheerful,” Penn replied and went on to say that what his critics recognize is the subject matter and these critics criticized him just to win Twitter friends for a minute. “It gave them something to do.”

During his “Conan” interview, Penn also pointed out that former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney have something to do with the emergence of ISIS. On the other hand, he commended the late Harvey Milk, who he portrayed in the 2009 film “Milk” winning him an Oscar award.
