The biggest visual effects scene in “Black Sails” Season 3 will be a storm in the ocean. Some of the cast members apparently had to go through “hell” to film the storm scenes, which took many days to film.

[Spoiler alert]

In an interview with Collider, the executive producers of the show talked about how they approached the next season of the show. The producers described the next season as “pirates on steroids” and said that they presented the executives at Starz with “ambitious scripts.”

Talking about the storm scene in the show, visual effects supervisor Erik Henry said that executive producer Jonathan Steinberg came to him with an idea of a “real storm” in the show. Steinberg wanted to show people falling to their deaths in the scene. Henry pointed out that such scenes may be common in big budget features, but given the time schedule that a TV series works with; it would be “much more difficult.”

“Authenticity is the challenge,” Henry said about creating a storm scene for “Black Sails.” The scene he planned to create had to look similar to what the fans have seen in movies like “The Perfect Storm,” Henry said.

Executive producer Dan Shotz revealed that it took many days to film the storm scene and the cast members had to go through “hell” for the scene. Shotz said that Toby Stephens (Captain Flint) walked up to him one day and asked him how many more days the storm scenes will take. Stephens also mentioned to the producer that the scenes were “killing” him. The producer noticed the actor’s ears were “completely red and burning” because of the jet engines that were used to create the wind effect for the scene.

A major new character being introduced in “Black Sails” Season 3 is Blackbeard (Ray Stevenson). Blackbeard was involved in starting Nassau, but had to leave suddenly. The reason for his departure will be revealed in the next season. The new character also has some history with Charles Vane (Zach McGowan).
