Apple's annual holiday tradition of giving out freebies to its loyal customers is back.

Apple has announced Monday its annual 12 Days of Gifts promo, which offers free apps, books, songs and movies everyday from Dec. 26 to Jan. 6.

The mechanics of the promotion is simple. Just download the 12 Days of Gifts app from the iOS App Store, choose the store location and a counter will appear showing how many days before the first gift can be claimed. Once the gifts become available, the customer has 24 hours to claim it. However, some content may not be available in some areas.

Based on available content in the previous years, Mashable predicts that Apple will give out games such as Sonic Jump and Geomaster, apps like The Photo Cookbook and singles from acts like Maroon 5 and Ke$ha. Digital Trends, meanwhile, predicts TV episodes such as How I Met Your Mother and books such as The Red Pole of Macau by Ian Hamilton.

For the first time, this promotion will be available in the U.S. iOS App Store. The 12 Days of Gifts promo was previously available in Europe, Canada, Russia, Japan and other countries. But due to regional licensing restrictions, the promo was not available in the U.S. at the time.

This is also Apple's second holiday digital promotion, the first being the Holiday Cheer playlists which consist of eight Christmas songs available for free download at the Apple Store app.

Meanwhile, other stores have been offering their own versions of holiday promotions. Microsoft offers its 12 Days of Deals, featuring huge discounts for a particular productp in a day. The promotion runs from Dec. 9-20. Sony is offering discounts on select products such as VAIO laptops, Xperia smartphones, digital cameras and TV sets.
