Actress Angelina Jolie criticised the United Nations Security Council on Friday for turning a deaf ear over Syria's four-year conflict and the plight of the refugees there. Jolie, who is a special envoy for the U.N. on refugee issues, also urged the world powers to help the millions of Syrian refugees. Millions of Syrians have abandoned their native country and left for neighbouring countries. They have also lost their lived in an attempt to flee Syria.

"We cannot look at Syria, and the evil that has arisen from the ashes of indecision, and think this is not the lowest point in the world's inability to protect and defend the innocent," Jolie said during a United Nations Security Council meeting regarding the refugee crisis in Syria at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Friday, according to The Associated Press. She holds the title of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The Hollywood actress said that the world powers are “standing by in Syria," because the U.N. council is unable to decide on what course of action can be taken to address the issue.

The “Maleficent” actress said she has visited the Syrian refugees in the region for eleven times since 2011 and their plight is uncalled for. She further urged foreign minister of each of the 15 council members to “work as one” and find a solution to the problem of Syria by visiting the war-torn nation and be the witness to the crisis of refugees. She also highlighted the issue of more than 1,300 migrants drowning in the sea in an attempt to flee Syria. The actress said it is “sickening to see thousands of refugees drowning on the doorstep of the world's wealthiest continent” and added that no person would want to risk the lives of his family “except out of utter desperation."

Jolie was promoted to the post of special envoy in 2012, after she served as goodwill ambassador for the United Nationals Refugee Agency, UNHCR for ten years. In her effort to help the nation, the actress has been on 50 field missions to more than 30 countries. Jolie has highlighted the issues faced by many countries including Sierra Leone, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Syria.
