There is speculation in the media that “Thor” actor Chris Hemsworth has been asked to present in the Logie Awards. The Australian actor, who won the Logie award for Most Popular New Male Talent in May 2005, has been reportedly asked to present the Gold Logie for Best Personality on Australian Television.

Hemsworth has not yet confirmed the news. Sydney Morning Herald, however, added that the ceremony also listed actor Eric Bana as the alternative choice for the presenter in the category in case Hemsworth is not available. Neither Hemsworth nor Bana responded to the news.

The Gold Logie Award has landed in controversy because only one female personality has been nominated in the category. Jessica Marais is the only Aussie female nominated; she was pitched Waleed Aly, a colleague on “The Project,” Peter Helliar, “Family Feud” host Grant Denyer, “Doctor Doctor” star Rodger Corser and “Molly” telemovie actor Samuel Johnson. Marais is nominated for her work in “The Wrong Girl” and “Love Child.”

“It makes me incredibly proud that 'Love Child' is well loved [and] probably just reaffirms that we have a great thing going and that people are excited to see the show, because it’s definitely got legs,” Marais was quoted as saying by the Herald Sun.

“As for 'The Wrong Girl,' the show has the potential to cover material that we haven’t seen on Australian television before. Lily as a character is such a juicy, open and accessible character. I feel very lucky to be playing [her].”

Critics have slammed the nomination selection process at the Logie Awards; many feel that there are so many other deserving candidates like Jessica Mauboy, who played the protagonist in one of the most successful dramas “The Secret Daughter” on Channel 7, and actress Marta Dusseldorp, who has been applauded for her work in “A Place to Call Home,” “Jack Irish” and “Janet King.”

Carrie Bickmore, Australian talk show and current affairs television and radio presenter, also spoke about the lack of female nominations in the Gold Logie category. Bickmore, who won the Gold Logie award in the past, said she can list more than ten names who deserve to be on the list, like Lisa Wilkinson.

“I know everyone says it is the public who vote, and I’ve been very fortunate so I’m not going to sit here with my violins out, but it does genuinely surprise me that there aren’t more women,” she told Confidential. The 59th annual TV Week Logie Awards will be held on Sunday, April 23, at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne. The event will be broadcast live on the Nine Network.
