“The Walking Dead” season 7 episode 11 gave fans a whole lot of backstory about Dwight, Negan’s supposed right hand man. Now that Sherry is gone, Dwight’s sense of devastation just might make him snap and lead him to make his own moves.

Spoiler alert: This preview contains plot details about “The Walking Dead” season 7. The season premiered Oct. 20. The series is available for Australian viewers to watch on Foxtel every Monday, 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Dwight knew that he was in deep trouble the moment he realised that Daryl was gone. The Alexandrian prisoner was his responsibility, but Daryl’s escape actually triggered a chain of events that could lead to Dwight having an epiphany.

Dwight had to cover up for Sherry, who was the catalyst for Daryl’s escape. With his favourite wife gone, Negan tasked his right hand man to look for her. Dwight felt a rollercoaster of emotions when he visited his and Sherry’s former house, where his ex-wife left him a note. And what was written on that piece of paper hit him pretty hard.

“The note is devastating ‘cause she doesn’t know who I am anymore,” said Austin Amelio, who plays Dwight on the AMC series. “She doesn’t trust me [and] it’s horrible.”

In her letter, Sherry actually confessed that she helped Daryl because of what the Alexandrian represented to Dwight. Amelio said that Daryl epitomises Dwight’s past, and the latter isn’t having any of that.

“It’s almost like a mirror reflection of his past,” said Amelio. “Dwight sees the guy that he used to be and he went against his morals and values by succumbing to this world. That’s not something he wants to be reminded of every day.”

Dwight’s situation is just heartbreaking, and fans somehow got to see the events that transpired that made him who he is now. And since Sherry has fled, he has no choice but to face what he has become, and all on his own. He sets up Dr. Carson, who takes the fall for Sherry’s actions.

“From here on out, he’s this calculated, cold-blooded killer,” said Amelio about his character. “And he’s got a plan.”

The only thing that keeps Dwight going is the hope that he and Sherry are going to meet up again. After all, she’s the love of his life. That’s the only thing he has left, and Sherry truly is what he’s fighting for.
