According to a research conducted by the European scientists, the best drug to treat erectile dysfunction is Viagra (sildenafil), however, at the same time, it has the most side effects. The study has revealed that the different drugs used for the treatment of the sexual disorder vary in terms of side effects and effectiveness.

During the study, the team of researchers from The Netherland and Switzerland collected and analysed data from the clinical trials of drugs used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Out of all the data from the trials, the researchers examined 82 studies of the drug effectiveness and 72 studies performed to test the effectiveness of the drug.

In addition to the analysis, the researchers compared the use of seven drugs for treatment of erectile dysfunction, including Viagra, Levitra, Helleva, Stendra, Cialis, Mvix and Zydena. The drugs used for comparison belong to the class of phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors that work in a similar manner—they inhibit the enzyme that reduces the potency of an erection.

According to the study results, 50 or 100mg dose of Viagra proved to be most effective and Stendra, when consumed in 50 to 200 mg doses, proved to be the least effective. However, Stendra had the least rate of side effect (8.5 percent) while Viagra caused side effects about 21 percent of the time. A 20 mg dose of Levitra caused side effects 25 percent of the time, the highest recorded rate as compared to any other drug.

According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, erectile dysfunction is not something that occurs with aging. Although drugs are commonly used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, it is not guaranteed if these will prove effective in every affected man's case.
