It’s Super Bowl season again in the US, with fans looking forward to the game itself and the halftime performance of Coldplay with Beyonce and Bruno Mars. On Sunday night (Monday morning in Australia), different brands also took centre stage as viewers at home anticipated the best and the worst of TV commercial ads in between the Super Bowl 50 game of the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos.

There were a lot of things that went on during the Super Bowl 50. Peyton Manning had his last hurrah on the field, Von Miller was named MVP, and the Broncos won 24-10 over the Panthers. Chris Martin and the gang, with help from Beyonce and Mars, also helped people stay glued to their television screens. Viewers didn’t get respite even during the show’s intervals, though, because brands that paid millions in dollars for a few seconds on air dominated the small screen.

Here are the most talked-about commercials during Super Bowl 50, including the new trailer launch for “X-Men: Apocalypse.”

Heinz: ‘Wiener Stampede’

YouTube/SnickersBrand

It’s a sight that cannot be unseen: Willem Defoe as Marilyn Monroe. All Snickers commercials have the same plot (an irritable someone, usually someone famous, who turns out be so hungry that he/she turns into another person), but their funny level differs with each person they put in a situation. This time it’s the respectable Defoe in Monroe’s white dress and most famous scene.

T-Mobile: ‘Restricted Bling’

YouTube/T-Mobile

It’s Drake dancing to the tune of “Hotline Bling” but with restrictions. Carriers attempt to ruin Drake’s top-charting single by adding restrictions to calls. The Canadian singer, on the other hand, thinks all their suggestions are genius.

Doritos: ‘Ultrasound’ and ‘Dogs’

YouTube/Doritos

File these under “weird” and “cute.” Doritos has a knack for making bizarre ads, and its Super Bowl ads were no different. The first (“Ultrasound”) earned a chuckle or two from viewers, while the second (“Dogs”) was just too cute.

Amazon Echo: #BaldwinBowl party

YouTube/Amazon

This star-studded one-minute ad is great for a lot of reasons, the first is the snippet of Missy Elliot’s brand new track, “Pep Rally.” It’s a football fan’s dream viewing party, complete with a mini stadium presentation of food. NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino, comedian Jason Schwartzman and Alec Baldwin also appear.

Budweiser: #GiveADamn

YouTube/Budweiser

Helen Mirren telling drivers to stay classy and #Giveadamn is a sermon anyone would not oppose to receive. The “notoriously frank and uncensored British lady” lectures alcohol drinkers to keep off the road, reserving a few choice words for stubborn people. The Budweiser ad is one minute of Mirren speaking to the camera in an attempt to discourage drunk drivers, and it’s a thing of unadulterated beauty.

Toyota: ‘The Longest Chase’

YouTube/Toyota USA

Toyota made viewers root for not only the bad guys in this commercial, but also for the Prius. “The Wire” actors star as the bank robbers with a heart (they left a bagful of cash for their victim). Chris Bauer (“True Blood”), Pablo Schreiber (“Orange is the New Black”) and James Ransone relive their days as part of the Sobotka clan in the amusing ad.

Bud Light: Bud Light Party with Seth Rogen and Amy Schumer

YouTube/Bug Light

Apart from Paul Rudd, the only thing Americans agree on is beer. Rogen and Schumer star in this election-themed, “Independence Day”-quoting ad from the beer-maker.

Audi: ‘Commander’

YouTube/Audi USA

Audi brought out all the emotions for its ad for Audi R8 V10 plus. The one-minute ad features a retired astronaut who relives his adventures with the new vehicle. David Bowie’s “Starman” plays in the background.

Hyundai: ‘First Date’

YouTube/HyundaiUSA

It’s Kevin Hart being an overprotective father. Hyundai stars the funnyman as he stalks his daughter and her boyfriend in their date with the help of Car Finder on the 2016 Hyundai Genesis.

Mountain Dew: ‘Puppymonkeybaby’

YouTube/Mountain Dew

Weirder than Doritos’ “Ultrasound” ad, Mountain Dew’s “Puppymonkeybaby” has, hands down, won the most flabbergasting commercial of the night. It’s “puppymonkeybaby,” and that’s the only explanation viewers need.

Skittles: ‘The Portrait’

YouTube/Skittles USA

“That’s E to the Z oh twiddly disgusting!” Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler exclaims upon seeing his Skittles portrait. (Is that Robert De Niro with him?)

Kia Optima: ‘Walken Closet’

YouTube/Kia Motors America

It’s a “Walken closet,” get it? Christopher Walken gives a boring, beige-wearing dude some sound advice in a walk-in closet.

Coca-Cola: Coke Mini (Hulk vs Ant-Man)

YouTube/Coca-Cola

This has Hulk and Ant-Man in one ad. That’s reason enough for many to watch it. Mark Ruffalo and Paul Rudd’s faces didn’t make an appearance.

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’

YouTube/20th Century Fox

The highly anticipated superhero flick has released a new trailer. Starring Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, the short clip for “X-Men: Apocalypse” features heart-stopping moments, including the introduction of Psylocke (Olivia Munn).
