British comedian and actor Stephen Fry has fueled a fresh debate on gay marriage. Fry has voiced his belief that gay marriage is unavoidable in Australia.

Speaking about his views on same-sex marriages, the 58-year old artist said that marriage equality is a foreseeable reality and is expected to happen soon. He also took a jibe on those opposing gay marriage and said that they will soon realize that all of their fears were baseless, News.com.au reports.

The 58-year old actor married his gay partner Elliott Spencer in January in a private ceremony in Norfolk, Virginia.

“The tide of history and the will of most Australians are on the side of same-sex marriage. It’s a huge and blessed thing for those marrying and a small, obvious and natural thing for the state to endorse it,” Fry said counting on his own experience.

“At all events, I think those who opposed (marriage equality) will find, as has happened in Britain, that their objections were baseless. The institution of marriage is stronger and quite unharmed, and no priests or ministers or imams were forced to marry couples against their beliefs. All is well,” Fry added during his visit to Australia to promote his BBC Knowledge travel series “Stephen Fry in Central America.”

Fry has been advocating gay rights from a very long time. It was in April 2014 that Fry and Ellen DeGeneres boycotted luxury hotel line owned by the Sultan of Brunei over the country’s anti-gay law. He took to Twitter to express his displeasure.

Australian Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull is working on the agenda of public voting to change the Marriage Act. Presumably, it will open the doors for gay and lesbian couples the chance to wed. Fry, too, revealed that he was aware of plans of the possible polls on gay rights after the next Federal Election.

During his visit to Australia, Fry also appreciated the beauty of the country and adored the “unique blend of larrikin and sophisticate.”
