Queensland Welcomes Tony Abbott's $320 Million Drought Relief Package as Dry Spell Continues

The worst drought in decades has hit 70 per cent of Queensland and has caused a live export crisis. More regions in the southwest are expected to be affected by the drought in the coming weeks. Australia's Prime Minister Tony Abbott has announced a $320 million drought relief package on Feb 26. Farmers in drought-affected areas will be given access to a five-year concessional loan programme worth $280 million. The assistance package will also provide mental health support.

Japanese Agency Responds to Sea Shepherd's Attack Claims; Sea Shepherd Calls for Protection in Open Letter

Japan's Fisheries agency has spoken up about Australia-based Sea Shepherd's accusations that it "attacked" one of its ships on Feb 23. According to a report from a Japanese news agency, the Sea Shepherd has "seriously hampered" its whaling research programme in the Antarctic Ocean when ropes thrown by the anti-whaling group in front of the Yushin Maru No. 3 and the Yushin Maru had become entangled in the ships' propellers.

A diver in New Zealand has survived the deep ocean when he was dragged underwater by a killer whale. The 23-year-old free diver Levi Gavin was gathering kina and crayfish at Horahora Estuary on Feb 10 when suddenly an orca whale grabbed the catch bag still secured in his arm. The whale dragged him deeper into the ocean for over 40 seconds before Mr Gavin was able to get away. A tornado has ripped its way through North Canterbury in New Zealand as rough weather and lightning caused extensive damage.
