“Doctor Strange” director Scott Derrickson took to social media to comment on Joss Whedon’s decision to quit Twitter. The “Avengers: Age of Ultron” director has removed himself from Twitter following the box office hit of his latest “Avengers” sequel.

Shortly after news spread of Joss Whedon’s exit from Twitter, Scott Derrickson went ahead and took a screenshot of the director’s profile page to comment. Derrickson’s response to Whedon’s “does not exist” Twitter account has since been retweeted 170 times and has received 271 likes since he posted it on Tuesday, May 5.

Theories from commentators as to why Joss Whedon decided to quit Twitter were varied. User Just a Scheme thought the director had enough of being tormented by feminists. While another user named Lexi claimed the director received a lot of criticisms for his representation of Black Widow in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

Joss Whedon’s exit from Twitter came following the blockbuster hit of “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” which according to Time, earned a total of million even on its opening weekend. However, despite the film’s success, some fans were clearly also not happy with the sequel.

Joss Whedon reportedly received a lot of criticisms from unsatisfied fans who were not pleased with some of the film’s plot points. The director was abused through Twitter with some users’ comments urging him to “die” or “commit suicide.”

According to Time writer Anthony Breznican, Joss Whedon was clearly bullied by anonymous trolls on Twitter because of “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” The most abusive comments were reportedly because of Black Widow’s “tentative relationship with The Hulk’s Bruce Banner.” There were also hateful comments about how Quicksilver was interpreted, considering the character’s death in the sequel. However, per Breznican these negative comments only seem like static against all the conversations surrounding the film on social media.

Joss Whedon had 1.14 million followers on his Twitter page. According to The Verge, before he closed his account he had posted a heartfelt thank you note dedicated to all his supportive fans and followers. He didn’t give any details to his exit but instead thanked “all the people who've been so kind and funny and inspiring up in here.”
