10. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which follows the lunar cycle.

9. The beginning of Ramadan falls on the night the crescent new moon is first sighted. Throughout the month, or until the next crescent new moon, Muslims will be observing Ramadan.

8. Ramadan 2013 begins on July 9. Eid al-Fitr, the day after the last day of Ramadan, will be announced on the next crescent moon.

Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohammad, the Grand Mufti of Australia, has released a statement in observance of Ramadan.

"We ask Allah to make our future better than our past, and turn our situations into the better," his statement said. "Have a blessed month, and may your acts of worship be accepted by Allah."

U.S. President Barack Obama also released a statement for the Muslims around the world.

"I wish Muslims across America and around the world a month blessed with the joys of family, peace and understanding. Ramadan Kareem," Obama said.
