PlayStation 4 marks 36M sales worldwide after selling 5.7M PS4 units during holidays

The PlayStation 4 has witnessed robust sales growth during the holiday 2015 sales season. Overall, it chalked up 35.9 million in global sales as of Jan. 3.

The new figures may even shame Microsoft as the Sony PlayStation 4 now boasts 35.9 million global sales, including the whopping 5.7 million PS4 console sales during the holiday season in 2015. The total sales of PS4 console was 30.2 million until November 2015.

While Microsoft seems content to show off Xbox Live users’ huge gameplay hours, it has not shared the console sales data for the holiday season or the sales data for 2015. Meanwhile, the Sony PS4 is showing off its strength.

Sony has released the sales report for the holiday season, indicating the PS4's huge sales. Sony has defined its holiday season as Nov. 22, 2015 through Jan. 2, 2016 for Europe, Latin America and North America. In Japan and Asia, the holiday season started a day later on Nov. 23, 2015 and lasted through Jan. 3.

However, Sony’s sales report is not limited to the PS4 console units sold. The company also revealed that it has sold 35 million PS4 games during the holiday season. The data covers the combined sales figures from the physical stores and digital downloads.

Meanwhile, even without revealing Xbox One console sales, Microsoft still excitedly gave some updates on how well its Xbox One consoles are doing. Over at the Xbox Wire, the company confirmed that its Xbox One exclusives have sold over one million copies. These titles include “Halo 5: Guardians,” “Rise of the Tomb Raider,” “Gears of War: Ultimate Edition” and “Forza Motorsport 6.”

Game sales are definitely the lifeblood for game consoles makers, but sales of hardware can assure a constant flow of content. The report on Sony PlayStation sales numbers are just for PS4 console and PS4 games, which means that the figures do not even include sales figure for PS3 and PS Vita for 2015.
