“Vampire Diaries” star Paul Wesley recently talked about his film “Amira & Sam” in an interview. Aside from describing his role in the film, the 32-year-old actor revealed why he can relate to the “Amira & Sam” story, discussed about making more indie films and expanding his work experience with directing.

Actor Paul Wesley is known for portraying vampire Stefan Salvatore in the CW TV series titled “The Vampire Diaries.” In the film “Amira & Sam,” Paul Wesley stars as the cousin of main character Sam (Martin Starr).

“This guy is definitely more human [than Stefan], and I mean that literally and figuratively,” the TVD actor stated in the MTV News interview. However, Paul Wesley described his “Amira & Sam” character to be very flawed, vulnerable, weak and does questionable things like illegal activities on Wall Street.

Paul Wesley admitted that accepting the film role was a change for him from what he does on a daily basis which is to portray Stefan Salvatore in “The Vampire Diaries.” The actor also admitted that the story of “Amira & Sam” is something that he can personally relate to.

The indie film tells the love story of American soldier Sam and Amira, an illegal immigrant from Iraq. Paul Wesley revealed that he was exposed to the film’s depiction of Islamophobia at a young age.

“My brother-in-law is Egyptian, it’s a middle eastern culture. I generally don’t like these kinds of films that are like, ‘Hey, we’re trying to spread a message,’ but this movie does it in a clever way,” Wesley explained.

After his work experience in “Amira & Sam,” Paul Wesley hopes to make more indie films in the future because he loves the genre and he can still fit it in his busy work schedule with “The Vampire Diaries.” The CW TV series also gave Paul Wesley the opportunity to sit on the director’s chair and work on an episode in season 5 and another one in season 6.

In a Vulture report, Paul Wesley talked about expanding his career with directing. The actor was asked if he has plans to direct an indie film and he teased that it is currently in the works following his experience from directing and starring in “The Vampire Diaries” Season 5, episode 18 titled “Resident Evil” and “The Vampire Diaries” Season 6, episode 11 titled “Woke Up With a Monster.”

“Amira & Sam” currently plays in select cities and on Video On Demand. Meanwhile, the fans can watch Paul Wesley as vampire Stefan Salvatore in “The Vampire Diaries” Season 6 airing on Thursday nights at 8/7c on the CW Network.
