A potential match between unified middleweight titlist Gennady Golovkin and IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook could be a worse mismatch than the touted Canelo vs Khan fight in May.

Matchroom Sport Promoter Eddie Hearn wants his fighter Kell Brooks to take on Golovkin at a catch-weight of 157 pounds, according to Chris McKenna of the Daily Star. Hearn said he has been in touch with Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler for a possible bout against GGG, seemingly looking ahead of Brook’s title defense against Canada’s Kevin Bizier on Saturday.

“I've also in touch with Tom Loeffler, Gennady Golovkin's manager and promoter, regarding the possibility of fighting Golovkin in a catchweight contest at 157 pounds,” Hearn, who also revealed that HBO approached him for a possible match between Miguel Cotto and Brook, said.

However, according to Scott Gilfoid of Boxing News 24, a fight between Golovkin and Brook would be difficult to stage due to the risk of low pay-per-view buys and it would be a mismatch worse than the May 7 clash between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and British challenger Amir Khan.

“What could make a Golovkin-Brook fight difficult to make is the fact that it wouldn’t be a PPV worthy fight in the U.S.,”Gilfoid wrote. “It might be PPV worthy in the UK, but definitely not in the U.S. If HBO put Golovkin vs. Brook on PPV in the States, I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t even break 50,000 buys.”

Golovkin, who is set to fight Dominic Wade on Apr. 23 at the Forum in California, has been laser-sharp in wanting a Canelo vs Golovkin bout this year, although the undefeated Kazakh has insisted it would not frustrate him to fight other challengers. However, a fight against Brook would not get Golovkin the big fights he wants.
