The signup program for the iOS version of Epic’s “Fortnite: Battle Royale” has begun. The news arrives with a controversy surrounding the game’s cross-play features.

Players with iOS devices simply need to head to the signup page and leave their email addresses to get on the waiting list. An official invite will be sent through email as soon as the mobile version is up and ready, with more invites soon to roll out when “the servers can handle more players.”

The Android version is expected to arrive in the coming months. Users may also leave their email addresses to be notified if and when “Fortnite: Battle Royale” for Android becomes available.

The battle royale title is expected to reach a wider market as soon as it becomes available for both consoles and mobile. Developer Epic Games recently announced a partnership with Microsoft that would enable cross-play between Xbox One, PC, Mac, iOS and Android. So where does the PlayStation fit into this picture?

In an email to Kotaku, a Microsoft representative stated, “Microsoft has long been a leading voice in encouraging the adoption of cross-platform play and the potential of connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles.”

The same email then reveals why cross-play for PlayStation players is still unheard of. “We’ve worked closely with Nintendo to allow cross-network play between Xbox One and Switch and our offer to do the same with PlayStation players still holds. For any other questions regarding ‘Fortnite’ cross-network play between Xbox and PlayStation, please reach out to Epic or Sony directly.”

In the past, Sony has expressed a lack of enthusiasm for cross-play between the Xbox and the PlayStation, most famously for “Rocket League.” Kotaku has attempted to reach Epic and Sony for comments, but neither has reportedly responded.
