Netflix has “heavily” invested on producing “The Crown,” its newest drama series based on the biographical story of Queen Elizabeth II of England.

Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, won’t disclose production cost details of the upcoming 10-episode series, but admitted that the network’s investment on “The Crown” was unprecedented.

“[The Crown] is produced to a scale that I don’t think many networks could step up to. Because our audience is large and global and the story is incredibly local, we can invest heavily in a project like that,” he said at the Royal Television Society conference in London Tuesday.

However, earlier reports claimed that the American streaming company has invested £100 million (AU$169 million) on a series about the Queen.

Created and written by Peter Morgan, “The Crown” traces the life of Queen Elizabeth II, starting from her 1947 wedding up to the present day of her reign. British actress Claire Foy plays the role of the 25-year-old newlywed who rose to become the world’s most popular monarch.

The main cast includes British actor Matt Smith as Prince Philip, British star Jared Harris as King George, English stage actress Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret, American actor-musician John Lithgow as Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and English actor-producer Greg Wise as Lord Louis Mountbatten.

“We are looking for stuff that is more brand-defining and tent pole,” Sarandos added, referring to the Stephen Daldry-directed drama-biopic series.

“The Crown” is expected to air six series over 60 episodes, the first of which will be streamed via Netflix starting Nov. 4.
