Copyright Alert System that has been sending warnings for one and a half years now will continue this year. However, the executive director hinted that in order to change people's mentality towards piracy the program will double in size.

This anti-piracy plan, known as Copyright Alert System, was created to educate people about copyright and piracy. The system sends warning to folks who pirate movies, TV shows and music.

The system informs the customer that their network is sharing copyrighted items without any permission. Apart from giving warning, the system also tells the user about legal alternatives to download copyrighted material.

TorrentFreak noted that more than 1.3 million alerts were sent in first ten months. However, the numbers are going to be increased.

Executive Director of the Centre for Copyright Information (CCI), Jill Lesser talked about Copyright Alert System at Aspen Forum (Technology Policy Institute). Lesser stated that the main aim is to change the social norm.

"The real goal here is to shift social norms and behavior. And to almost rejuvenate the notion of the value of copyright that existed in the world of books and vinyl records," Lesser explained.

He said that these warnings are like "slap on the wrist," but at the same time they inform the customers about source from where they can get original and legal content.

Apart from sending more warnings, the CCI wants to add more ISPs and copyright holders.

Professor Chris Sprigman was also a part of the panel with Lesser and he commented that Copyright Alert System is focussed towards people who are into casual piracy. He stated that many would use proxy to access pirate websites, but the warnings may change their behaviour later on.

It has to be seen if this technique would help in curbing piracy in the long run or not.
