This week, “Black-ish” goes on Halloween mode. Andre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) deals with ghosts from his childhood. Meanwhile, the Johnson kids, Zoey (Yara Shahidi), Junior (Marcus Scribner), Jack (Miles Brown) and Diane (Marsai Martin), finally settle their issues with their cousins.

The Sherman Oaks neighbourhood, where the Johnson family lives, is well-known for its great trick-or-treat atmosphere. Because of this, kids from nearby communities come over to enjoy the festivities with the locals.

The Johnson cousins from "the hood" come over every year, and Andre is happy to see them rough up his kids. He thinks that his children have grown up soft due to being raised in an affluent neighbourhood, and the occasional beating that they get from their cousins will help them toughen up.

When Halloween comes around, the cousins arrive. To Andre’s surprise, his kids prepared for the occasion and attack their cousins as soon as they walk in the door. Just when Zoey, Junior, Jack and Diane think that they’ve won, their cousins from "the hood" take over Junior’s room and lock them out.

Based on the video from WhipClip, Diane suggests using mind games and starts insulting their cousins. The Johnson kids hurl insults about their cousins’ questionable parentage and their cheap knockoff clothing. The strategy works and they get Junior’s room back. However, the “hood cousins” end up losing interest in going out to have fun during trick or treat.

Meanwhile, Andre’s own cousin, June Bug (Michael Strahan), also arrives. He starts bullying Andre, and the kids understand that Andre was picked on as a child. They finally realise that this is the reason why he’s been telling them to toughen up and stand up for themselves all these years.

Andre is unable to stand up for himself and starts hiding from June Bug. His mother, Ruby, finds him and tells him to stop being a little baby. She explains to Andre how many times June Bug actually stood up for him against other bullies while they were growing up. She even told him that June Bug once threw him out of a car while they were partying and drinking because he didn’t want Andre to get a police record.

Everything comes into perspective and Andre starts to appreciate how much June Bug got his back. He reconciles with his cousin and learns to embrace the banter and the bullying. He even lets June Bug call him “tea kettle” because he screams like a whistling kettle.

As Andre comes to terms with his childhood bully, his kids also manage to find a connection with their “hood cousins.” When Jack gets bullied on the street and ends up getting his candy stolen, the “hood cousins” decide to go for revenge. They stand up for Jack and get the candy back.

In the end, the relatives from “the hood” manage to endear themselves to the Johnsons and everyone enjoys a great Halloween dinner.

"Black-ish" airs every Wednesday at 9:30 pm ET on ABC.
