“Big Brother Australia” has just officiated a faux marriage between strangers, and the housemates are not buying it! Drew and Jade were complete strangers but that didn’t stop Big Brother from telling them to act as husband and wife and fool their housemates.

Twenty-four-year-old Drew, a student from Victoria, and 22-year-old Jade, a model and barmaid from Ballina, were in for a shock of their lives when they were introduced to each other in the diary room. They thought they would be entering the BB House as a regular house guest, but they forgot that the BB House is anything but regular.

“I can’t see myself getting married in the next five years... unless something drastic happened,” Drew said on his introduction video.

Luckily for him, something drastic really did happen.

“Big Brother will introduce you to the other housemates as Big Brother’s first ever married couple,” Big Brother told the two. “Big Brothers now pronounces you husband and wife.”

Both were amenable to the idea, though, and quickly exchanged rings and got to know each other better. As instructed, they concocted their own love story, opting for a simple boy-meet-girl theme. They had one rule for each other, though, and that is no flirting with other housemates in order for their sham of a marriage to become believable.

Big Brother gave them one week to make the others believe that they are truly married. If they succeed, they can’t be nominated for eviction. However, if even one of the housemates went to Big Brother to report their suspicion that the two were not really married, then both Jade and Drew would be automatically nominated for eviction.

If you think that’s shocking and cruel, it’s got nothing on the twist done in the Philippine franchise. In one season of the local “Pinoy Big Brother” edition, two strangers were also instructed to pretend that they’re married. But unlike Jade, the “wife” in the Philippine edition was already married in real life... to another housemate.

And in one emotional scene, the fake married couple celebrated their anniversary with a romantic dinner, with the real husband serving as their waiter. The fake husband was also married in real life, too, but his wife wasn’t part of the show.

Back to the current Australian edition, Jade and Drew entered the house and were given the honeymoon suite, a luxury room separate from the others. Big Brother wasn’t heartless, though. He gave them a bed that can be split in two.

Unfortunately, it looked like the housemates weren’t buying their lovey-dovey act. The others have voiced out their suspicion amongst themselves, and have tried to catch the two in their lie.

So can the two hold onto their pretence for a week?
