Bernard Tomic exacted revenge on David Ferrer 6-4 6-2, beating the Spaniard in straight sets at the Grandstand Court. Tomic will face the winner of the match between Richard Gasquet and Vasek Pospisil in the third round of the 2015 Shanghai Rolex Masters.

Tomic dispatched the seventh seed Ferrer in one hour and 15 minutes in the second round of the Shanghai tournament. The victory marked Tomic’s second consecutive win over Ferrer in an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event setup. The highest-ranked Australian previously beat Ferrer at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells 7-5 6-4. Ferrer is the second seeded player after Roger Federer to be eliminated in the tournament.

Tomic fired eight aces and saved eight of his nine break points. He won 75 percent and 54 percent of his first serve and second serve points, respectively. Next up for Tomic is the winner of the second-round match between Gasquet and Pospisil.

The 22-year-old had lost against Gasquet in their last four meetings, with their most recent encounter taking place in the hard courts of Flushing Meadows. Gasquet beat Tomic in straight sets 6-4 6-3 6-1 to improve his head-to-head series 6-1 against the Australian. Tomic’s only victory against the World No. 8 Frenchman came in the third round 7-6(7) 5-7 7-5 7-6(5) of the Wimbledon Championships at the All England Club in 2013.

Meanwhile, Tomic had played 43rd ranked Pospisil only once at the 2014 Claro Open. He beat the Canadian 6-4 6-4 in the quarterfinals and eventually claimed the Colombia title, which he successfully defended this year.

The Australian is drawn in the same bracket as Novak Djokovic. He could face the top seed Serb in the quarterfinals, should he further advance in the tournament. Djokovic is coming off from winning his sixth title at the 2015 China Open and will begin his campaign against Martin Klizan in the second round.

In other match, 13th seed John Isner defeated David Goffin 6-3 7-6(5). Isner awaits the winner between Andy Murray and Steve Johnson.
