Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) may be back in “Avengers 4.” The directors of the film have confirmed that the character is now free to roam the universe after the events in “Infinity War.” The following article contains spoilers from previously released Marvel movies.

One of the most shocking scenes in “Infinity War” was the cameo appearance of Red Skull, the villain from “Captain America: The First Avenger.” Readers should note that the character did not die in that film, and he was simply transported to Vormir.

In Vormir Red Skull was cursed to take others to the place where they can try to attain the Soul stone. Red Skull was the first to go after an Infinity stone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his curse was to stay close to an object that he will never posses.

Thanos (Josh Brolin) was able to get the Soul stone by sacrificing his daughter Gamora (Zoe Saldana). Now that there is no Infinity stone for Red Skull to lead others to, he is free.

The Russo Brothers, who have directed both the “Infinity War” and the untitled upcoming film, have confirmed on the official “Avengers” Twitter page that Red Skull is free. The statement came in reply to a fan who asked them about it [see below].

Red Skull may be free, but he may not be a part of the next film. There are already too many heroes to accommodate and storylines to wrap up. However, the fact that Red Skull is still alive means that he will be a part of the next phase of Marvel movies, which will focus on new superheroes like Captain Marvel (Brie Larson).

“Avengers 4” is set to be released on May 3, 2019 in the US. The producers are yet to announce an exact release date for Australia.
