Many women never leave their homes without applying cosmetics. That’s because these beauty products can effectively make one look more attractive and desirable especially to the eyes of the opposite sex. However, many are unaware that these products contain chemicals which are hazardous to one’s health. Here are some toxic makeup ingredients to avoid.

  1. Parabens

Ever wonder how cosmetics aren’t easily expired? That’s because of parabens, commonly used preservatives found in many beauty products which prevent bacteria, mould and yeast from forming. This ingredient can cause breast cancer tumours.

  1. Benzoyl Peroxide

This is one of the ingredients found in many acne products. It can damage one’s DNA and mammalian cells. Aside from that, it can cause irritation of skin and eyes especially when inhaled.

  1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

This ingredient is known as a surfactant and is commonly found in many foaming products used for cleaning as well as in mascaras. It can irritate the skin, eyes and lungs.

  1. Triclosan

Known for its antibacterial property, triclosan is actually toxic. It is known to disrupt the production of hormones. It’s classified as a form of chlorophenol making it carcinogenic.

  1. Formaldehyde

Another popular preservative is formaldehyde which is used to prevent bacterial growth in cosmetics products. It is an identified carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Carcinogens. It can cause allergies and even nasal or nasopharyngeal cancers.

  1. Sunscreen chemicals

Examples of such chemicals are benzophenone, avobenzone and ethoxycinnmate which can also damage the DNA and cause cancer. They’re the main ingredients of many sunscreen products including makeup formulated with SPF.

  1. Fragrance

This ingredient is added in many makeup products to make them smell pleasing to users. However, fragrance is just a cover up for a combination of several chemicals which are known to cause allergies, dermatitis and respiratory disorders.

Toxic makeup ingredients are present in many beauty products. Protect yourself from them by always checking the labels or asking experts for advice.
