Spoiler alert: This update contains “Once Upon A Time” Season 4 finale spoilers. Read on at your own risk.

In the culmination of Operation Mongoose, Henry’s two mothers faced the consequence of saving the ultimate threat of OUAT Season 3: Rumplestiltskin. (Not the Queens of Darkness, after all.) Things were already going well in Storybrooke after Henry has undone the alternate reality that Rumple and the Author have created. But Belle could not simply watch her Rumple die.

If Belle had not asked for everyone’s help, the town would still be in grave danger. Rumple’s death would mean the complete takeover of the Darkness inside his body. In effect, he would lose every last bit of light and goodness inside him. This is why he felt compelled to bid Belle goodbye; even she would not be able to get him back.

To save Rumple, the Sorcerer’s Apprentice drew out the massive entity of darkness within him and tried to trap it into the Sorcerer’s Hat. Rumple’s heart turned white anew, but he remained unconscious. However, the darkness slipped out of the hat. Storybrooke would be in great danger if this tethered darkness spread into smaller entities and influence everyone.

Someone, a hero, had to do what the Sorcerer has done before: tether the darkness into one being and cast its power into the dagger connected to the Dark One. At one point, Regina expressed willingness to do it. But Emma was not willing to see her waste everything she’s done to come into the light. So, Emma sacrificed herself.

Regina was horrified. Snow White/Margaret was heartbroken by the turn of events. She and Prince Charming sent off Lily into a world without magic; yet Emma was still turning completely dark.

Moving into the jumpstart point of “Once Upon A Time” Season 5, Emma leaves her fate into the hands of her family -- a family of heroes, including Regina. The viewers learned toward the end that Merlin exists in ABC's OUAT universe. He is the Sorcerer.
