Michelle Obama looked stunning in a navy peacoat at the lighting of the National Christmas Tree at the White House Ellipse on Thursday. The Obamas officially kicked off the holiday season by lighting the tree. The star-studded ceremony was hosted by actress Reese Witherspoon.

The 51-year-old First Lady sparkled in her coat that featured gold cuffs. She matched the gold of her cuffs with her gold hoop earrings. Her locks were styled in loose curls and kept centre-parted. She wore some gloss on her lips.

Reese meanwhile opted for a black coat and matching gloves for the event. She looked dazzling in drop earrings, which she paired with black heels. The actress finished her look with bright red lipstick and her blonde hair styled in waves and left loose over her shoulders.

US President Barack Obama, Michelle, her mother Marian Robinson, the couple’s daughters Sasha and Malia were present at the Christmas tree lighting. All of them took the stage together at the 93rd annual National Christmas Tree Lighting. There were performances by David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, People reports.

Also, Fall Out Boy, Andra Day, Aloe Blacc and more artists performed.

“ Happy holidays to Reese and everyone here tonight and everyone watching at home. Merry Christmas, everybody,” Obama said. Miss Piggy of “The Muppet Show” and Santa Claus also enthralled the audience. After the lighting of the tree, Obama and Witherspoon led a rendition of “Jingle Bells,” E Online reports.

There were some light-hearted moments during the night when Miss Piggy tried her best to steal Witherspoon’s hosting gig. Unfortunately she did not succeed. Later, she read the famous poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas along with Michelle. “ You look fabulous. Almost as fabulous as moi,” she told the US first lady.

Miss Piggy was dressed in a glittery outfit paired with patterned stockings, Huffington Post reports. The festivities also featured performances from Scandal ’s Bellamy Young, Kelsea Ballerini, Tori Kelly, Trombone Shorty, the Joyous String Ensemble and the United States Coast Guard Band.

Thousands in Washington attended the 93rd Annual National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony to catch a glimpse of the first family celebrating the holiday season. This was the seventh consecutive year that the event has been hosted by the Obamas, since their first year at the White House for Christmas in 2009.
