It was the stuff of soap operas: A woman woke up from a coma only to reveal that the loyal boyfriend who had stayed by her side while she was immobile is actually the one who inflicted her injuries in the first place.

Liu Fenghe, from the Liaoning province in China, was initially portrayed in the media as the loyal and caring boyfriend who took care of Lin Yinying and stayed by her side after she was left comatose from an accident in 2014. Local reports said he spent 200,000 yuan (AU$41,350) on her medical bills. He even vowed to take care of her for the rest of his life.

However, months after she woke up from an 8-month coma in May last year, she revealed that Liu was actually an abusive partner who put her in her vegetative state. She told the press that Liu started beating her repeatedly when she unintentionally burnt some bread in their bakery shop. He apparently grabbed a rolling pin and hit her on the head.

It wasn’t the first time he physically attacked her. Lin said Liu had abused her before, but she was too frightened to report the incidents to the police.

According to Chinese media (via Metro), Liu told her family not to visit her while she was unconscious. Her family were finally able to take her home in February 2015. She did not want to speak out about her abuser in public at first, but her father, Lin Shuqing, encouraged her to do so. She has since reported the incident to the police.

“You have died once, what more are you afraid of? It’s time to confront reality,” Lin quoted her father as saying.

Reports online do not mention if Liu has been arrested since she reported him to the authorities.
