Walmart refuses to endorse Apple Pay and has instead launched its own proprietary mobile Walmart Pay app. The multinational retail giant said Walmart Pay will start rolling out in the U.S. starting this month.

The new smartphone based payment solution will work for all kinds of credit cards, debit cards and Walmart gift cards purchased from the retailer’s own U.S. stores. Customers can access the payment app on any iOS and Android phone, reports Slate. Walmart Pay is the newest among other mobile payment services.

To use Walmart Pay, customers should open the app, activate the cameras on their smartphones and scan the QR code on a product. Once the code is scanned properly, the purchase is complete. To register for Walmart Pay, visit Walmart.com and sign up for your payment option.

Only a few selected locations like Bentonville, Arkansas (site of Walmart’s world headquarters) enjoy Walmart Pay at the moment but the technology will roll out to other parts of the U.S. by the middle of 2016.

Neil Ashe, CEO and president of global e-commerce, said the new app’s meant to help customers enjoy easy a hassle-free payment option. Besides, the new payment app helps customers make payments from any smartphone provided it runs an Android or iOS operating system.

The reason why Walmart decided to develop a payment app was not to oust Apple Pay, but to hit back at MCX, the Walmart-partnered consortium established in 2012. MCX later signed agreements with partners that led to the launch of Apple Pay, which Walmart didn’t like, reports Forbes.
