‘The Voice’ Recap: The Top Eight Perform Live, Joshua Davis And Sawyer Fredericks Score Big On Download Chart
Monday’s Top Eight Performance Night on “The Voice” showed how the remaining contenders of the prestigious singing competition dominated the stage with solid and powerful song renditions. Joshua Davis and Sawyer Fredericks have proven their worth as they ended up at the top two for the night, while America was left to decide which two will be sent home Tuesday night.
Second to perform was Michigan dad Joshua Davis from Team Adam, who apparently got back on his feet after ending up in the bottom three and was fortunately rescued via Instant Save last week. His cover of Sting’s “Fields of Gold” proved to be a savvy song choice as his soothing vocals dominated the piano-driven arrangement; it even ended up at number seven in the iTunes download chart the following morning, Rolling Stone reported.
The youngest contestant of the season, 16-year-old Sawyer Fredericks of Team Pharrell, was the sixth to come up on stage, first struggling with his strained vocals as he started his rock classic cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man,” TVLine stated. He did manage to pull himself together towards the end; as judge Gwen said, there was something “riveting” about the way he brings a lyric to life with emotional honesty, which added to his appeal towards the audience. His Monday night cover apparently reached number two on the download chart the following morning, joining Davis on the chart’s Top 10.
The other six performers were Team Blake’s Hannah Kirby who gave her take on Tina Turner’s “We Don’t Need Another Hero,” Kimberly Nichole from Team Xtina with Radiohead’s “Creep,” Team Blake’s country-turned-soul singer Meghan Linsey with George Harrison’s “Something,” Team Xtina’s India Carney with “Wizard of Oz” ballad “Over the Rainbow,” Corey Kent White of Team Blake with Bad English’s “When I See Your Smile” and Team Pharrell’s Koryn Hawthorne, with Alicia Key’s “Girl on Fire.”
Former judges CeeLo Green, Gwen Stefani, and Usher reunited on the show to assist coaces Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Pharrell Williams and Blake Shelton in mentoring the eight songbirds. Shakira, the only past judge who could not make it to the big reunion since she was in Spain with her family at the time, gave an inspiring message via satellite, encouraging the singers during the show.
Ceelo was last seen in Season 5, when he quit the show while he was in the midst of date-rape and felony drug count controversies less than a year ago. None of the said hullabaloos were mentioned by anyone on tonight’s episode, though outraged viewers took to Twitter to express their dismay on the former judge’s guest appearance, Yahoo! reported.
Monday’s broadcast will determine who of the remaining eight “The Voice” hopefuls are top six-worthy. Davis and Fredericks were clearly the night’s most powerful performers, while Kirby, White, Linsey and Carney are in danger of being sent to the bottom ranks. The top eight will be whittled down to six on Tuesday, April 28, 8 p.m. on NBC.
