The State government of Victoria supported 59 policy changes suggested by the Bushfires Royal Commission. The final report of last year's devastating bushfires was released last month and carried 67 suggested policy changes.

In principle, the State Government supports a phased increase in controlled burning, as well as, the appointment of a supreme fire commander. Several of the recommendations being considered require appropriations.

Costly and controversial recommendations such as the upgrading of power lines and a voluntary property buyback scheme in high-risk areas are still placed under discussion. Replacing all single wire powerlines in Victoria would result in an additional 20 percent to Victorians' power bills.

Five of the fires were reported to have been caused by faulty lines. The Government promised to consult the community on the recommended changes. A primary report on the consultations is expected today.

The 18-month long Royal Commission recommended Victoria's “stay or go” policy to remain but it has emphasized on the need to encourage people to leave early when bush fires strike. The disaster that struck on February 7 last year killed 173 people.

The State Opposition has pledged to implement all of the Commission's recommendations. It has urged the Government to do the same.
