Miley Cyrus has been dubbed by media as the 'Queen of Twerk.' Her viral video twerking in a unicorn onesie has been numerously shared by millennials on the Internet, and most of them copy the former Disney star's twerking moves. When and where did it originate? And lastly, why is the Internet going crazy about it that even grandmothers can twerk like Cyrus?

According to Mental Floss, twerking's movements is similar with several West African dances, especially Mapouka, which hails from the Ivory Coast. Mapuoka is known locally as "la dance du fessier" or "dance of the behind," and is said to exist in two forms: the traditional dance and the modern, scandalous version popular among young Ivoirians.

The modern Mapouka version is closely related to twerking and deemed by some as obscene that it was banned by the Ivoirian government when the group Les Tueuses performed it in public. However, its prohibition didn't stop modern Mapouka to spread throughout coastal West Africa and New Orleans in the United States in 1993.

DJ Jubilee, a popular hip hop artist at that time, recorded a song titled "Do the Jubilee All" with lyrics that goes: "twerk baby, twerk baby, twerk, twerk, twerk." 'Twerk' is a portmanteau of the words 'twist' and 'jerk,' thus creating a new dance move that has steadily survived over the years and is now gaining popularity among the millenials.

Twerking's provocative dance moves and its intense popularity among the young generation is getting social media crazy. Celebrities who helped twerking to become very popular include Rihanna, Beyonce, Vanessa Hudgens, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift and even Harry Styles of One Direction and Justin Bieber.

ABC News reported in May that over thirty San Diego high school students were suspended when a teacher saw a YouTube video of them, mostly female students in tops and leggings, twerking with each other and even upside down in the school yard. The students who joined the video may be banned from prom, graduation and other school activities as part of the overall suspension.

According to school authorities, the students have violated the zero-tolerance sexual harassment policy, which prohibits "verbal, visual, or physical conduct of a sexual nature made by someone from or in the educational setting."

Twerking may be just one of the fads that will eventually die down when a new dance craze takes over or when Miley Cyrus gets tired and picks up a new one. For those who are interested to learn how to twerk, here is a video to help you learn the moves.

And if it's not enough, here is a video of three grandmas twerk like Miley.
