China's Miao Room cavern found within the Gebihe cave system at Ziyun Getu He Chuandong National Park was said to be the world's largest cave chamber after its measurements were found recently. It measured 10.78 million cubic metres which is four times the size of the Great Pyramids.

According to National Geographic News, before the size of the cave was found, the world's largest cave chamber was Sarawak Chamber in Malaysia by 10 percent as the Sarawak Chamber measured 1.66 million square feet. The size of Miao Room was found with the help of 3D laser-mapping technique during an expedition.

In an article in the July issue of National Geographic, details of how 3D laser scanners are used for the purpose of mapping caves has been explained by McKenzie Funk. The amount of time that a laser pulse takes for reflecting to its source is the principle of the scanner.

The 2013 international caving expedition was conducted under the Institute of Karst Geology in Guilin and funded by the National Geographic Society. The Miao Room is found in Southern China. The region predominantly has soft rock that can easily be eroded by water. This resulted in a landscape full of caves.

Guangxi and Guizhou Province contain many of the largest caves in the world. A geology team from China and Europe made the first documentation in 1989. But in 2013, experts from the University of Lancaster revealed its measurements.

It was found 100 metres into the ground and it is said that it could accommodate a Boeing 747. The world's biggest stalagmites with a height of 45 metres are also found inside the chamber. Because of accumulation of thick layers of sediments and the cave being located under a sea for a span of 600 million years, the stalagmites were formed.

An 852 metres passage connected two massive domed chambers. This led to suggestions that it could actually mean that there are two chambers.

During the Hidden Earth 2014 national caving conference from September 26-28 in England, the measurements were revealed. The measurements of other large cave chambers namely Titan Chamber and Hong Meigui Chamber in southern China and the Sarawak Chamber in Malaysia were also announced. The images of the supercaves can be viewed on the National Geographic Magazine.
