When DICE and EA first teased “Star Wars Battlefront” at E3 2013, eager fans wondered what the game would look like on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Last month’s full reveal during the 2015 “Star Wars Celebration” answered that question emphatically. A gorgeous trailer showed richly detailed graphics and a faithfully rendered universe. But how was DICE able to create such stunning graphics on PS4? The developer has opened up, praising its tools and talent.

Speaking on the latest episode of the PlayStation Blogcast, “Battlefront” Senior Producer Sigurlína Ingvarsdóttir shared that a large part of the game’s technical prowess was due to the talent of the amazing engineers and artists at DICE. She added that the company’s proprietary Frostbite Engine, which powers “Battlefield 4” and “Battlefield Hardline,” has allowed the company to push the graphical envelope. She also stated that because this is the team’s second PS4 game, they have a better handle on the console’s capabilities.

“This is DICE’s second game out on the next gen consoles and out on PS4 and we learned a lot on the previous title, ‘Battlefield 4,’ and now we’re at the place that we feel like we’re getting more familiar with the hardware. I’d say we’re really being able to -- as I think our gameplay video shows -- we’re really able to get the maximum out of the hardware and really able to sort of harness that power,” she said.

Ingvarsdóttir went on to add that close collaborations with the engineers at Sony have also aided their development. As noted in its E3 2014 teaser trailer, the development team has made much of what it calls an unprecedented relationship with Lucasfilm that has allowed them access to props, locations, sound effects and music from the original trilogy of movies. DICE is using a relatively new 3D scanning technology called Photogrammetry, which allows them to capture and digitise props and items at extremely high resolution before converting them to game assets.

“Star Wars Battlefront” will be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC on November 17. The game will feature massive 40-player battles raging across four different planets set in the “Star Wars” universe. EA and DICE also plan to release a free post-release DLC pack called “The Battle of Jakku,” which takes place after the Battle of Endor and bridges the gap with the upcoming Hollywood film, “Star Wars The Force Awakens.”
