"The Key" is the title of "Scandal" Season 4 Episode 5. The episode is about Jake, who has been framed for the murder of President's son, and the murder trial of Catherine, who was arrested in episode 3 for allegedly murdering her stepdaughter, Caitlin.

In episode 3 of Season 4, Catherine, an old friend of Olivia and Abby, met Olivia, seeking her help to find her missing stepdaughter. Later, Olivia discovered that Caitlin walked out of the house and checked into a hotel after she saw her boyfriend and Catherine in a compromising position. When the news flashed that Caitlin has been murdered, Olivia thought that it is her friend who killed her daughter, as she was threatening to tell the truth to her father. A video, however, made Olivia think that Catherine may not be the killer. In the video, Caitlin is trying to stop a man, whose face cannot be seen, from taking a folder that she is holding. Before Olivia could dig further, Catherine was arrested for her daughter's murder.

The last episode saw Jake getting arrested for the murder of President Fitz's son. Before he could tell the President that it is Rowan who ordered the killing of his son, Rowan turned the table on Jake. He made Tom say that it is Jake who ordered him to kill Jerry. The preview says "Olivia Pope's lover has been framed for murder. No friend, no father, no fixer can save him now." It will take some time before the truth is revealed and the real mastermind, Rowan, is exposed.

In the last episode, Jake tried telling Olivia about her father's truth, but was unable to do that as Olivia was busy fixing the sex tape scandal of Fitz's daughter. The episode 5 preview suggests that Olivia will be in the dark about what happened to Fitz. She, however, is likely to find out that the President has Jake. It will be interesting to see what she does next.
