Though rage comics are popularly known in Reddit.com, these comics didn’t originate from this site. Yes, it may be the home of crazy rage comics now but this madness started on a site called 4chan.com, which was the biggest online imageboard website a few years ago.

4Chan was launched on October 1, 2003. The site was used for the postings of pictures and served as a discussion forum for mangas and anime. Users use usernames to hide their real name in posting images and concerns since most of the posts were related in internet subcultures and activism.

The first amateur rage comic was created in 2008 and was posted on 4chan’s /b/ board with the FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU Rage guy 4 Panes introduction. This is why they’re called rage comics even if some rage comics are not actually created to express rage or anger.

These rage comics became viral and have reached Reddit in January 2009. Reddit.com created the “FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU’ or F7U12 sub-reddit to allow Redditors to create their own rage comics. New rage faces were then created like “everything went better than expected” and “cereal guy.”

Since the popularity of these comics is unstoppable, rage comic experts created easier ways to create Rage comics. Rage builder sites were developed to help users to create rage comics instantly. Memebase Ragebuilder, Cheezeburger.com, and Dan Awesome’s Ragemaker are among the most popular rage builder sites.

In October 2011, a Japanese instructor named Scott Stillar created a sub Reddit called “EFL Comics.” The purpose of this sub Reddit is to help the students of University of Tsukuba, Japan to speak and communicate in English. After 15 days, the sub Reddit got 2,900 up votes which is indeed succesful. In an interview with Professor Stillar, he explained why he chose Rage Comics as a modern teaching tool.

“Rage comics are special because at their core they consist of well known faces or expressions which are meant to show universal emotions of varying degrees under a wide variety of circumstances.” Stillar told The Daily Dot.
