Several staff of Qantas are unhappy with the new uniforms of the airline that are set to debut next month.

"The uniforms are really tight and they are simply not practical for the very physical job we have to do," according to a flight attendant cited by the Daily Telegraph.

The refreshed Qantas uniforms are designed by premier Australian designer Martin Grant and were launched in an elaborate fashion show. Model and Qantas ambassador Miranda Kerr showed off the new airlines outfit last September.

"The uniform looks fantastic on Miranda Kerr but unfortunately we don't all look like her. Hosties range in age from their 20s to their 60s and a lot of the older ones don't want to wear tight-fitting uniforms. We like the current Peter Morrissey-designed uniforms. They are really comfortable," another flight attendant complained.

A spokeswoman for the Flight Attendants Association of Australia National Division said union members have already talked to the airlines to inform them of their concerns.

"We have asked the airline to tweak the uniform a little to accommodate some concerns. Once it comes in and the crew are wearing it we will be having more discussions. If there are more issues, obviously we would expect the company to iron them out," said the spokeswoman.

However, a Qantas spokeswoman answered that the design of the new uniforms included input from several crew members who wore the outfits for several weeks for trial.

"The feedback we've had from staff on the new uniform has been overwhelmingly positive. There are bound to be some adjustments needed as we roll out multiple pieces to 12,000 people, but it's been going very smoothly and there's a lot of excitement," she said.

Aside from the overhauled uniforms, Qantas also implemented stricter rules on make-up of stewardesses. The airline prohibited the flight attendants to put on eyeliner and eyeshadow and can only use three Napoleon Perdis lipstick colours.

Accessories were also limited to a plain watch and single ring with only silver, gold or pearl earring studs. No bracelets or necklaces are allowed. Staff wearing jewellery for religious reasons was given exception.
