Russian President Vladimir Putin has been christened by the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as the modern Cain of the old Biblical times. Moreso, Mr Putin had been doing his invasion into Ukraine because the church believes he is guided and has been allegedly possessed by Satan.

Patriarch Filaret, head of Ukraine's Orthodox Church, said Mr Putin's recent actions and behaviour towards Ukraine is increasingly becoming similar to that of Cain, one of two sons of Adam and Eve.

"He calls himself a brother to the Ukrainian people, but in fact according to his deeds, he really became the new Cain, shedding the brotherly blood and entangling the whole world with lies," Filaret said.

According to the Book of Genesis, Cain and Abel were the sons of Adam and Eve, known in the Bible as the first man and woman. Cain, the eldest, is described as a crop farmer, while younger brother Abel was a shepherd. Cain was the first human born and Abel was the first human to die, with Cain as the world's first murderer. Interpretations by ancient and modern commentators of Genesis said the motives for the murder were jealousy and anger.

Filaret said Mr Putin's stance on Ukraine meant to "incite killings and bloodshed."

Filaret said he does not believe that Mr Putin wants to stop the bloodshed and death, but rather he believes Russia's top leader will continue to multiply evil for the sake of his pride.

In April, Russia occupied the Crimea peninsula by force.

The tensions between Russia and Ukraine escalated when in July pro-Russian separatists rebels allegedly downed Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 by using a surface-to-air missile. All 298 passengers and crew onboard died.

Mr Putin got all the more embroiled when "tanks and troops and arms and advisers under the guise of separatists" reportedly entered into eastern Ukraine last week where a ceasefire is currently in effect.

"These matters indicate that the above mentioned governor as the first in the history fratricide Cain, came under the action of Satan," Filaret said.

Mr Putin has denied all accusations, but has said that if he wanted to, he can take Ukraine in just a matter of two weeks' time.
