Premier Bligh doubts the gov'ts mining tax plan
Queensland's Premier Anna Blight will questions the new mining tax plan proposed by the federal government, stating that it poses a threat to the nation's mining industry.
The Federal Government has invited several mining businesses to expose its books on a confidential basis and conduct modeling on the proposed super profit tax.
The government stressed the need for a tax to protect the growing profits of Australia's minerals from going offshore.
However, Premier Bligh is worried that the new tax arrangement will result in a disincentive for more investments from mining companies.
Ms. Bligh said she will review further on the details of the new mining tax.
"We'll be working very hard when we look at the detail to make sure that we can protect the expansion of our mining base. If there's a problem, we won't hesitate to draw it to the attention of Canberra and the Prime Minister."
Ms. Bligh added that the mining sector of Queensland must be protected and admits that some aspects of the plan are positive,
She also said there must be a clear understanding on the significance of tax reform in Australia and how will it benefit Queensland.
"It does mean that we can protect the royalties that fund many of the projects and services that Queensland communities, particularly regional Queensland need."
