Optus, the telecommunications company, says that its users in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney will have access to "supersonic" broadband speeds.

The company announced that users in the areas would experience Internet speeds that are four times faster than usual. The faster access is due to the upgrade of the Optus Hybrid Fibre Coaxial.

"Australians are hungry for high speed broadband, so we've upgraded our cable network to provide the broadband speeds of tomorrow, today," said Michael Smith, the consumer managing director of Optus.

More than 1.4 million households are expected to have access to the service. The faster broadband is available through a premium speed pack upgrade priced from $15 a month.
