Miriam Margolyes of ‘Harry Potter’ fame criticised for alleged racist joke on Jews and blacks

Miriam Margoyles is in the middle of a lot of controversy because of an alleged racist joke that she cracked at the London Film Convention. She is known not only known for her famous role of Professor Sprout in the “Harry Potter” movie series, but also for cracking explosive jokes.
It has been reported that Miriam was charging £5 (AU$1.71) for signing photographs at the London Film Convention on Nov. 12. The actress allegedly made a discount joke on Jews and blacks that humiliated a black fan.
It is believed that the actress said that Jews and blacks get the privilege of having discounts. A woman who was present there filmed the incident. The video has been released by the Sun where Miriam is heard saying to a black fan, “can't you afford five quid?” It was followed by, “I'm giving you a discount because you're black."
The Sun quoted the unnamed woman saying, “I recognised the man she targeted from other events and he looked humiliated.”
Although the “Harry Potter” actress could not be contacted, a spokesperson of the actress said, "Miriam's comments were made in jest and she would be mortified if anyone took offence."
While the world is fighting against issues of racial discrimination, such a comment by Miriam was not received positively. A few years ago, Miriam made a joke about the Black Eyed Peas star Will.i.am in the Graham Norton Show where she said that she would be fascinated to have him as a friend since he was black.
Miriam Margolyes is the BAFTA winner for her character of Mrs Mingott in “The Age of Innocence.”
