Several miners will put their operations on hold or reassess plans to continue operations in Australia after Sunday's announcement of an addition mining tax on super profits.

Rio Tinto is one of them as it declared to discontinue its plans of $11 billion iron ore operations in Western Australia for doubting the Federal Government's proposal.

BHP Billiton follows as it also reassesses its iron ore and coal projects in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia.

Another mining company, Origin Energy, told media yesterday, the proposed 40 per cent mining tax will increase energy prices by making its drive power plants more expensive.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd yesterday met with mining companies to persuade the key players of the industry that a 40 per cent rate is "about right" and non-negotiable.

Some mining executives addressed Mr. Rudd that his proposal will put the Australian resources sector at risk as it will drive out investments overseas.

Mining executives also accused the prime minister of deceiving the public by branding the tax as "super-profits" tax.

Mr. Rudd has consented to another meeting with the mining companies next week. It is believed that the Treasury is undergoing revisions on the implementation of the tax.

Opposition leaders like Premier Tony Abbot and West Australian Liberal Premier Colin Barrnet said they will continue to oppose the tax and warned that companies are weighing their options to shift their investments elsewhere.

Chinese companies on the other hand are also appalled by the sudden tax and shifted its investment plans from Australia to Africa, Asia and South America instead.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty of Canada commented that the Australian tax may help increase mining investments in his country.

Mr. Rudd told a radio station yesterday that his meeting with mining company executives were "robust."

They were very forthright in putting their views and their concerns about the super-profits tax that we're proposing," Mr. Rudd said.

"I was equally forthright in explaining why we believe this is necessary."
