The Google Nexus 5 features an amazing camera with optical image stabilisation to reduce blur during captures. Android 4.4.2 KitKat enhanced the overall performance of the camera but there is still room for improvement. A developer made a camera patch to fix the worst things and boosts other factors for greater imaging experience.

Jishnu's Camera

XDA developer forum member and recognised contributor, Jishnu Sur, made a camera patch that fixes the worst attributes found on the Google Nexus 5. It is compatible with Android versions 4.4, 4.4.1 and 4.4.2 KitKat that can be flashed on the smartphone. Jishnu's camera will bring different changes on the camera app such as:

1. Sound recording is now stereo

2. Secondary microphone enabled

3. Improved focusing speed

4. Front camera shooter records 720p video resolution at 20 Mbps

5. Audio bitrate on the front camera is now at 192000 kbps

6. Antibanding default is set to 50 Hz

7. Focus range adjusted accordingly

8. Enhancements on the smooth zooming

9. Enables turned edge enhancement

Comments regarding the camera patch show debate if the Nexus 5 really needs such improvements or tweaks than what Google already provided on Android 4.4.2 KitKat update. But if an XDA developer did something to significantly improve such feature, it means that the camera can be fixed or upgraded using software update and there is no hardware related issue on the lenses or modules.

Installation of Jishnu's Camera

This is great news for Google Nexus 5 owners which will bring more than just fixes on current camera problems. However, users must be aware of the drawback on flashing the camera patch as it requires unlocking the boot loader and rooting the smartphone.

Unlocking the boot loader and rooting the device will cost its current warranty and may actually cost additional payment from network carriers to cover new warranty for modified devices.

You can check out the flashable zip files from Jishnu's official XDA thread to see how many are needed to get all the improvements for Nexus 5's camera app. And if you are not ready yet to tinker about the Google smartphone, you may want to research first regarding the steps to unlock the boot loader and gain root access. You can always restore the firmware by downloading the stock ROMs from Google in case something goes wrong.
