Kate Beckinsale is back with a vengeance, with her latest movie opening at number one this weekend. "Underworld: Awakening" was not the underdog at the box office this weekend. Despite wintry weather in parts of the country this weekend, moviegoers flocked to see the fourth installment of the "Underworld" films, which stars Kate Beckinsale, Michael Ealy and Stephen Rea. Those out to see Beckinsale, who plays a leather-clad vampire warrior, kick some serious human-force behind managed to help the film bring in $25 million its opening weekend.

This is the fourth film in the vampire action saga. Beckinsale starred in the first two movies as the warrior Selene, then bowed out of part three but returned for this latest installment. "Underworld: Awakening" was shown for the first time in 3-D as well as on IMAX screens, where it made $3.8 million.

Sony had hoped the film would end up in the low-$20 million range. However, Rory Bruer, the studio's president of worldwide distribution, said that the fact that it did even better despite a snow storm that hit much of the Midwest and East Coast, primarily has to do with Beckinsale's return. "She is such a force. Her character, you just can't take your eyes off of her. I know the character is very dear to her, as well, and she just kills it," Bruer said. "The 3-D aspect of the film also brings something, makes it a fun, visceral ride," Bruer added.

In the number two spot, Cuba Gooding Jr.'s World War II flick "Red Tails" brought in $19.4 million. Meanwhile, Mark Wahlberg's "Contraband" grossed $12.2 million causing it to fall from number one to number three in the box office. Also, having opened up in theaters nationwide this weekend is Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks' post-9/11 drama "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," which pulled in $10.5 million.
