J.K. Rowling Announces Production of Harry Potter Prequel in a Stage Production

"J.K. Rowling is pleased to announce that she is collaborating with the award-winning theatre producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender on a new stage play to be based on the Harry Potter stories," read the announcement on Dec 20, 2013, on J.K. Rowling's Facebook page.

According to the announcement and reports based on it, the new production will take fans back in time, when franchise protagonist Harry Potter lived in a house of muggles, in a closet under the staircase. The storyline will explore the early years of Harry's life as an orphan and an outcast.

J.K. Rowling will be a co-producer of the upcoming "Harry Potter" project. She will also collaborate with the writer but not write the script herself. As per the announcement, a writer and the directors are being finalised. The project will move on to its development phase in the year 2014.

"Over the years I have received countless approaches about turning Harry Potter into a theatrical production, but Sonia and Colin's vision was the only one that really made sense to me, and which had the sensitivity, intensity and intimacy I thought appropriate for bringing Harry's story to the stage. After a year in gestation it is exciting to see this project moving on to the next phase. I'd like to thank Warner Bros. for their continuing support in this project," said J.K. Rowling in the Facebook announcement about "Harry Potter" prequel production while explaining her decision of the production.
