India wants monitoring of Blackberry services
RIM proposes security measures to country
India's security officials have come down hard on Research In Motion's statement that it does not have a "master key" to monitor data traffic on BlackBerry.
"We are very clear that any BlackBerry service that cannot be fully intercepted by our agencies must be discontinued. Offering access to data is part of the telecom licensing guidelines and has to be adhered to," said a security official in an interview with the Economic Times. The official adds that services that cannot be intercepted must be discontinued.
RIM has said BlackBerry security is based on a system where the customers create their own key and the company neither has a master key nor any "back door" to allow RIM or any third party to gain access to crucial corporate data.
The Economic Times reported that RIM had put forth a proposal to the Indian government to help them track emails. The solution, however, kept encryption details secure. The article adds that the solution offered by RIM is currently under testing by security agencies.
A positive test on the interception of services would avert a Blackberry block in the country.
