The new teaser of “Homeland” Season 5 focuses on Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin). The clip suggests that Saul and Carrie Mathison’s (Claire Danes) relationship has taken a huge hit.

Patinkin reveals that Saul is in DC and has been passed over for the head of CIA, and Carrie might not have been helpful in that process. It looks like Saul is going to blame Carrie for not getting his due promotion, as she is seen saying to Saul in the clip that she did not “tank” his bid for directorship.

Also Patinkin says in the teaser clip that his character has been “ignited” and is “alive.” He, however, does not reveal the reason behind this new-found zeal.

“He will do anything it takes to make this world a better place,” Patinkin says. “Saul might be angry, he might be hurt, but at the end of the day, he probably is the best in the business.”

Danes sees the new season’s Saul as someone who has become “calcified.” “Before he was challenging the status quo” the actress says, adding that now he has started to become the status quo. Patinkin, however, does not agree, as he says that his character has not become calcified, and he ignores those who try to put a label on him.

“Homeland’s” director and executive producer Lesli Linka Glatter hints that viewers may see a different Saul in Season 5. “He [Saul] has become a bit more a company man maybe than he has been before,” she says.

“Homeland” Season 5 picks up two years after the events of Season 4 finale. It premieres Oct. 04 in the U.S. Carrie will be seen on a self-imposed exile in Germany and estranged from CIA. She will be working for a private security firm.
