A Russian website reports on Tuesday that almost five million Gmail usernames and passwords were posted in a forum. This becomes a challenge on Google credibility to keep private data safe.

Russian website CNews first reported about this issue and notes that the leaked usernames and passwords from Gmail were found at a Russian Bitcoin Forum. To verify the issue, TheNextWeb contacted Google and reports that the company does not believe that the system is being compromised on its end. Google claims that there are no evidence about the security breach and assures everyone that whenever there is an alarm, the company takes steps to keep all the information safe and secure the accounts.

Since the leaks were posted on a forum, a lot had doubts on the file that was shared and the forum administrators are reported to have purged the passwords that came from the text file. And the leaker on the forum tvskit, claims that 60% of the passwords are still working, according to TheNextWeb.

There is an update coming from LifeHacker that notes some of Reddit users claim that the leaks could be passwords that leaked from other websites and were connected to the Gmail accounts. All of the links that LifeHacker have shared were removed from Reddit, according to Rappler.

Google recommends users to protect the devices from malware on its Safety Center page. It also recommend users to use the two step verification where users will need to enter its password as usual, but has to enter a verification that will be sent by Google on the phone via text or voice call or via the mobile app to help users secure its accounts.

Now, to prevent or at least to try to avoid these instances, users should always create strong passwords and never use the same passwords on multiple accounts. For users that would like to know if its account was affected, please follow this link and enter the email address as suggested by TheNextWeb. For users that are currently using the same password on multiple accounts, this could be the best time to change password just to secure the accounts.
