A couple, Jayne and Jon Cornwill, resorted to gender selection treatment. The treatment is illegal in Australia. The couple decided to go in for it after having three sons.

According to The Guardian, the couple, from Mount Barker in South Australia, said that they were keen on having a girl to complete what they called their "family puzzle." The couple made a decision of travelling to the United States for a controversial procedure, which is banned in Australia, the gender selection treatment or preimplantation genetic diagnosis.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis is allowed in Australia but only under various acts and guidelines. It is done only to prevent the transmission of genetic disease or abnormality but not for the selection of the gender of the embryos. Jayne Cornwill, on Dec. 1, told Channel Nine, that the treatment should be made available in Australia as well for the selection of the gender.

Cornwill said that after having three boys, they really wanted a baby girl. She said that they had tried all the natural things like diets, position as well as followed the old wives' tales but to no luck as none of it worked. They then decided to seek medical intervention.

The couple flew to the US where they underwent preimplantation genetic diagnosis, which is basically a procedure that allows the couple to find out the gender of the embryo. The Australian couple spent around $50,000 for the treatment after mortgaging their home. Cornwill said that the procedure was not cheap and that they had a failed attempt last year and the second attempt was successful and had a daughter named Emmerson a few months later.

The couple had been longing for a daughter for long so Cornwill said that the birth of Emmerson happened after a long period of "gender disappointment." She said that it felt like they were mourning the death of a child they never had. She added that her husband, Jon, wanted a baby daughter so that he would have the opportunity to walk her down the aisle some day and she wanted to have daughter so that she could share that relationship and her sons had wanted a baby sister.
