The last episode of “Game of Thrones” (GOT), titled “No One,” featured Arya Stark’s (Maisie Williams) story arc involving the Faceless Men of Braavos. Although the show is shrouded with mystery, it is this particular plot that poses more questions with the viewers.

One of the most common questions is who are these so called “Faceless Men”? They are described to be a guild of assassins who have a reputation of getting their job done and whose skills are extremely costly to hire. However, it is noted that their big boss is not human at all, but is the “Many Faced God,” who in other terms is the “God of Death.”

The group of assassins was first introduced in Season 2, when Jaqen H’ghar spent some time with Arya in Harrenhal. Arya saved three prisoners that were about to be killed. One of them was Jaqen. Because of this, Arya stole three lives from the Many Faced God. Jaqen asked her to give three names whom he will kill to repay the Many Faced God. After the task was done, both of them escaped the place, he gave her a coin from Braavos and the key phrase “Valar Morghulis.”

He parted ways with her and said that if she wanted to train with him, these are the two things that she needs. With that, he showed the capability of the Faceless Men, which is changing his face to another person’s. This led Arya to find him in the House of Black and White in Braavos.

Jaqen explained the guild’s history running back to ancient Valyria. Slaves pleaded to end their suffering to different gods. A man heard their plea and started killing all the masters and their slaves. This started the Faceless Men and their creed that death is a gift, Popsugar shares.

When Maisie Williams was asked if she thinks Arya can be a legitimate Faceless Man, she said “no.” She further explained that to become a real assassin in the guild, one must become No One and forget who he or she is.

In this case, Arya could not forget who she is even if she kept on answering “I am no one” when asked. This is because the epitome of her being is the main reason that she was in Braavos, Entertainment Weekly reports. She believed that she is Arya Stark and she will go back home to avenge her family.

The next “Game of Thrones” episode, titled “Battle of the Bastards,” will air on June 19 on HBO. It will also air on Foxtel in Australia.
