Disney bought the "Star Wars" franchise in 2012 with the plan to revive the project much to the delight of its fans all over the world. The saga has returned this year with “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” and broke ticket sales record that serves as a testament to its profitability. It turns out that Disney has bigger plans for the franchise and is developing a series of standalone films to be able to release “Star Wars” movies annually.

Wired reports that Lucasfilm is looking to build the franchise indefinitely. “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” writer Lawrence Kasdan thinks that the plan could work given the franchise’s rich mythology that opens up a lot of possibilities. “Star Wars is its own genre. Like all genre, it can hold a million different kinds of artists and stories. They say ‘Buddha is what you do to it.’ And that’s Star Wars. It can be anything you want it to be,” he said.

However, “Star Wars” franchise boss Kathleen Kennedy has made it clear that nothing has been perfectly cast in stone and that they are trying to take it one step at a time. “I love how you’ve already jumped to the conclusion that it’s all working,” she says while laughing. “Oh my God, there is so much to get right. It’s by no means laid out beat for beat. I’ll borrow a line from Raiders of the Lost Ark: We’re making this up as we go.”

As of now, Lucasfilm has definite plans for the franchise up to 2020 with a trilogy and Anthology spin-offs in the making.

“Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” opens on December 18, 2015 followed by “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” on December 16, 2016 and “Star Wars: Episode VIII” on May 26, 2017. The Hans Solo anthology is planned for release on May 25, 2018 followed by “Star Wars: Episode IX” sometime in 2019 with the third instalment set for release in 2020.
